Bukumbi : Tanzania
Bukumbi is a small village to the east of Lake Victoria in Tanzania. The village is a refuge for people with Leprosy and Albinism. Albino people are not safe in the wider public - they are still attacked and often mutilated and their body parts are used in witchcraft which is still widespread within the country. I went to Bukumbi to support a charity called Bridge2Aid. B2A send dentists from the UK to train local medical officers in basic dentistry and, as a result, help thousands of people out of pain - many of whom having suffered for months, sometimes years. The trip was humbling and uplifting in equal measures. It was a privilege to meet people who have experienced great sorrow and misfortune in their lives who still find a will and determination to smile, get up in the morning and get on with their lives.
